“The confidence we have in the technical and scientific impartiality of a photograph is in fact the need we feel for it to have an unchanging subject behind it. In this sense I thought that photographs contained modernism and the ideological composition of the modernist life-style. As I sought a way to create a heterotopia from these photographs, I wanted to use them as a space within which I could move. This gave me the imaginative opportunity to recall what had been repressed.”
